Influence of MER-29 on experimental atherosclerosis of cholesterol-fed cockerels.

چکیده
• It has been reported that MER-29, 1[(4-diethylaminoethoxy) phenylj-l-(p-tolyl)2-(p-chlorophenyl) ethauol, significantly lowers both serum and tissue cholesterol in rats and humans." Further investigation has demonstrated that drug-inhibited cholesterol synthesis in the body was due primarily to a block in a late stage of cholesterol synthesis. The present study was undertaken to study the effects of MER-29 on the blood lipids and on aortic and coronary atherosclerosis of cockerels placed on either a regimen of plain mash, or on an atherogenic diet which consisted of 2 per cent cholesterol plus 5 per cent cottonseed oil added to plain mash.

THE higher incidence of coronary atherosclerosis in young male as compared with young female humans is well established as are similar sex differences in susceptibility in some other species. The administration of female sex hormones to cholesterol-fed cockerels has been reported to have beneficial prophylactic as well as therapeutic effects on coronary atherosclerosis. In one study reported by...

Influence of various dietary fats on hypercholesterolemia and atherogenesis in cockerels.
• It is evident that both dietary and metabolic factors influence plasma cholesterol levels and the development of experimental atherosclerosis. The type of fat normally consumed is one of the important dietary factors. Although the "polyunsaturated" fatty acids (consisting primarily of linoleic acid) are known to depress plasma cholesterol levels, it does not follow that an excess of dietary l...

IN A STUDY comparing the antiatherogenic action of estradiol-17a and of estradiol-17/? in cholesterol-fed chickens, it was observed that, although both isomers were able to induce testicular atrophy at the dosage used, only estradiol-17/3 prevented coronary atherosclerosis j 1 2 similarly, in men active estrogens but not estradiol-17a are able to influence blood lipids. The mechanisms involved ...
متن کاملEstrogen-induced regression of coronary atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed chicks.
The present study demonstrates that estrogens reverse previously induced coronary atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed cockerels, despite the continued presence of the atherogenic stimulus in the diet. Aorta atherogenesis remains unaffected. Hypercholesterolemia is moderately enhanced by estrogen administration; total cholesterol-lipid phosphorus (C/P) ratios are depressed to normal levels, conse...
